Escalator in Medellin
The Comuna 13 district, located on the outskirts of Medellin, the second largest city in Colombia, is one of the poorest parts of the city. During the regime of Pablo Escobar, the infamous Colombian drug lord, many people escaped the city to the hills nearby, what caused overpopulation in some parts of the city and unsustainable growth. The result was a shortage of basic municipal services such as electricity, water, sewage, police and transport, what can be seen there until today. This led to poor quality of inhabitants' life. The gang war is at its peak, and Comuna became the most brutal district in Medellin.
In the last decade, the city has done everything to improve the quality of life in the poorer district of Medellin. One of the ways was to launch some innovative public investments. One of these initiatives was the construction of massive escalators.
