London secret nuclear reactor - Royal Naval in London
For more than 30 years (1962-1996), there was a nuclear reactor in the heart of London, close to the busy traffic artery and public houses and buildings. Its existence so close to the metropolis was kept secret from the public because it was very controversial.
The reactor was located in a basement of the King William building at the old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. Royal Naval College was founded in 1873 and was in a 17th-century complex of buildings designed by a highly prized English architect Sir Christopher Wren. At first, buildings served as the Greenwich Hospital, a retirement house for disabled sailors from the Royal Navy. The word "hospital" meant only a place providing hospitality. After closing the hospital in 1869, these buildings became the Royal Naval College, where navy officers were trained.
Natural cold storage chamber in Siberia - Merzlotnik
The Yamal Peninsula in north-west Siberia is covered with permafrost and although winters there are very cold, summers happen to be quite warm, at least as when speaking of Siberian standards. So, when in the middle of the 20th century a fish processing factory was built nearby, a cold store was needed. Fish caught in Arctic waters could be stored during the summer before they were processed, packaged and exported to Western Europe.
The processing plant was situated in Novy Port at the mouth of the Ob River. The village developed in the 1920s as a temporary port where ships crossing the North Sea Route could stop and get supplied. After the fish processing plant was established, fisheries became the main industry in the town of Novy Port.
